Nakuru, Kenya: Nakuru County government has entered into an agreement with a leading Chinese firm for the construction of a solar power plant.

The project estimated to cost over US$100 million (Sh8.74 billion) will be undertaken by Dongfang Electric International Company, one of the major power production firms in China which will also invest in a street lighting project in trading centres within the county.

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and Dongfang Vice President Hu Weidong said they were finalising details of the power plant expected to generate 50 megawatts.

“The company is the largest power firm in China and we have agreed on the financing mechanism and entered into an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding),” Mr Mbugua said yesterday after a meeting with the corporation officials in his office.

Mr Weidong said the county will benefit from China’s competitive edge in solar power production. “We are sure the two projects will bring light to the people and boost the economy. Power is a priority for the economy to pick,” he said.

Reduce cost

The Chinese team which has been on a two-day tour of the county said they had identified a lot of potential in various fields including agriculture and tourism.

Mbugua said they also sought the assistance of the Chinese in upgrading the dilapidated sewage system in the county.

He said the power produced will be added to the national grid leading to a reduction  in the cost of power.

Last week, the County Assembly passed a Motion asking the county government to light all the streets and trading centres in the county to spur a 24-hour economy.
