Nurse, 23, commits suicide in Homa Bay

By James Omoro | February 2nd 2021

A nurse in Homa Bay County has committed suicide.

Evans Odhiambo, an employ of the county government at Ngodhe Island dispensary is alleged to have committed suicide in his house on Sunday.

The 23-year-old nurse reportedly hanged himself with a rope tied to the roof.

Odhiambo started his duty on Sunday morning and later took a break at 1 pm.

He is said to have gone back to his house which is in the facility where he was resting.

However, the reason why he committed suicide has not been established.

The deceased was employed to work under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) scheme in May 2020.

Homa Bay County Health Executive Richard Muga, said the nurse did not join his colleagues in the ongoing health workers strike.

“The health officer was attending to patients up to the last moments before his death,” Prof Muga said.

Muga said the death of the nurse was discovered when other medics wanted him to go back to the facility from his house to reduce the work load since more patients were seeking medical care.

“One of his colleagues went look for him in the house and found the body dangling from the roof,” Muga  said.

Muga appealed to nurses to remain calm as security officers conduct investigations.

Mbita Sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Commander Philip Sang said the nurse never left a suicide note.

“The reason why he committed suicide is not been known. Meanwhile, we are conducting the investigations to unearth circumstances surrounding his death,” Sang’ said.

The body was moved to Kirindo mortuary for postmortem.
