Two arrested with Sh1.6 million fake currency in Kisii

Two suspects have been arrested in Kisii town in possession of Sh1.6 million fake currency.

The two were arrested by police officers at the town's main bus terminus. Kisii central police Ward Commander Stanely Mbuvi led the operation.

According to the police, the suspects had plans to circulate the old 1,000 notes to mobile money transfer agents within the town.

Initial investigations indicate that the suspects had already circulated close to Sh2 million in the last few days.

The suspects had tied the notes in bundles of Sh100,000 each.

Kisii County Police Coordinator Martin Kibet has confirmed the arrests saying the two will be taken to court Friday morning.

"The public must be extra careful. Some criminals are busy circulating the fake currencies as we approach the October 1 deadline issued by the Central Bank of Kenya to return all the old notes," said Kibet.

Kibet said several businesses people had lost millions to the said suspects and many more others who are yet to be arrested.

"This is a warning that security officers are on high alert and we will not allow a situation where hard working Kenyans lose money to unscrupulous individuals."
