Mudavadi pushes for balanced trade during Morocco visit

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has emphasized the need for a more balanced trade relationship between Kenya and Morocco.

On Sunday, Mudavadi received a briefing on the status of Kenya-Morocco bilateral relations from senior officials at the Kenyan Embassy in Rabat, led by Ambassador Jessica Gakinya.

The meeting focused on strengthening economic ties, particularly by increasing Kenyan exports to Morocco.

"Our discussions focused on narrowing the existing trade imbalance by enhancing exports of Kenyan tea and coffee to Morocco," Mudavadi shared via his official X account.

Kenya's trade deficit with Morocco is significant, with imports - mainly fertilizers and other key commodities - valued at Sh 12 billion, while exports trail far behind at just Sh 500 million.

"While our imports, mainly fertilizers and other key commodities stand at Sh 12 billion, our exports remain significantly lower at just Sh 500 million," Mudavadi said.

Beyond trade, the discussions touched on broadening cooperation in key strategic sectors.

These talks come ahead of the expected signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday, which are aimed at deepening bilateral engagements.

Mudavadi is also set to hold high-level bilateral discussions with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch.

A major highlight of the visit will be the official inauguration of Kenya's embassy in Rabat-an important milestone in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
