Panic as gunmen shoot guard near IEBC boss' house in Karen, Nairobi

NAIROBI: There was panic on Wednesday when a gang shot and wounded a guard at a gated compound where Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Isaack Hassan lives in Karen, Nairobi.

The gang of about four tried to gain access into the compound but the guard resisted.

Police say they shot twice wounding the guard seriously in the pelvis.

“The compound is huge with about 20 houses and we cannot say they were going to Mr Hassan’s house.

“The shooting happened at the entrance of the compound,” said Langata OCPD Elijah Mwangi.

TARGET

Hassan was not at home at the time of the incident and it is not clear who the target of the gunmen was.

“Yes there was an incident there but it was at the larger compound.

“Chairman is currently outside of the country officially,” said IEBC spokesperson Tabitha Mutemi.

Three armed policemen are stationed at Hassan’s house guarding him round the clock.

They were at the house at the time of the incident but did not respond.

Other guards there said the gangsters were all armed when they struck on Wednesday morning.

SECOND TIME

This is the second time that such a shooting happens at the same compound.

In February 2013, there was a shooting incident targeting Hassan’s car but he was not on board.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident in which unknown people broke into the private offices of Lugari MP Ayub Savula and stole documents and electronic goods.

Mr Savula said the burglars accessed his office on Finance House along Loita Street after breaking a rear window.
