Volleyball: Prison warders jail Co-operative bankers after tough duel

Kenya Prisons started their title defence on a positive note as national volleyball play-offs served off yesterday at Makande Indoor gymnasium in Mombasa.

The title holders showed little respect for their opponents Co-operative Bank as they hammered them in straight three sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) to remain in title contention.

Prisons needed only 21 minutes to wrap up the first set with Ibrahim Oduor, Denis Mukua and libero Charles Bosire earning the warders points before wrapping up the second set in 19 minutes. The bankers then looked demoralised and lost the third in 17 minutes. But Stanley Mutua and Moses Omondi were instrumental in the bankers’ side.

Prison face rivals General Service Unit (GSU) in a high adrenaline match today.

In another match, GSU used all tricks to overcome stubborn Kenya Ports Authority to revive their chances of reclaiming the title they lost last year to Prisons.

GSU won against KPA 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23) in a tension but exciting match.

KPA banked on their player-cum-trainer James Ontero, captain Sammy Ngeny and Bernard Musumba while GSU had their captain David Kirwa, Cornelius Ruto and Abiud Chirchir, who played their hearts out to ensure they won the match.

Nicholas Kimeli, GSU team manager, said he was happy with the win, which has boosted their morale as they prepare to battle Prisons today. “The win has put us at a better position,” he said. [Ernest Nzioka]
