Moi University receives 18,000 book donation

Eldoret, Kenya: Moi University has received a boost to their library stock after they received 18,000 volumes of books donated by a US-based organisation, Books for Africa.

The organisation in involved in collecting, sorting, shipping and distributing books to students of all ages in Africa, with an aim of encouraging a reading culture.

The university’s Chief Librarian, Prof Tirong arap Tanui, revealed that the institution first received books and computer donations in 2006, and that the current consignment was done to equip the Odera Akang’o campus in Yala.

“Getting knowledge from books is a journey to understanding creation in all forms. The volumes are going to supplement our library stock and transform the research standards in the country,” said Tirong.

George Ayeko from Books for Africa said that they were touched when they learnt of the deficit of books at Moi University’s Odera Akang’o campus.

“The Yala campus administration sought support from us to access more books so that they could enhance research and other academic activities. We were lucky to receive a huge donation than we expected,” he explained.

According to Oyeko, the organisation will establish more ties with other institutions of higher learning in Kenya, in a move to achieve their mission of ending ‘book famine’.

The occasion was graced by the Deputy High Commissioner for Nigeria in Kenya Mohammed Danjaji and Moi University acting Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Chepkuto.

Danjaji said the donation was timely, especailly after Kenya and Nigeria signed a raft of bilateral relationship agreements.
