Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has signed an MoU with Mukumu Mission Hospital to enhance the training of doctors.

Medical students at the university will take their practical lessons at the hospital while diploma students at the hospital's medical school will further their training at the university.

The hospital's administrator, Mr Stanley Kinuthia, said: "This deal will benefit not only the hospital and the university but also the whole community."

Health Executive Peninah Mukabane said the partnership would help alleviate the shortage of doctors. She said the county currently has only 75 doctors against a requirement of 250.

Kakamega Diocese Catholic Bishop Joseph Obanyi asked the university and the hospital to expedite the implementation of the agreement.

"I hope it will not remain on paper,"he said.
