Federation of Women Lawyers condemns rejection of Monica Juma’s nomination

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA Kenya) condemns decision by Members of Parliament to reject the nomination of Dr. Monica Juma by the President as the Secretary to the Cabinet.

FIDA said the committee report cited a letter that Ms. Juma wrote to House clerks complaining about the number of visits and requests MPs made for transfers or employment of State workers as the main reason for her rejection.

FIDA in a statement to newsrooms states that reasons given are flimsy and do not warrant her denial to serve the people of Kenya.

"Juma's nomination was informed by the distinction and success she has earned serving the nation as an Ambassador to Ethiopia and, Permanent Representative to the African Union, Defence PS, and in her current position as Interior PS," read the statement.

FIDA said Kenyans must be reminded that during her tenure in the various offices, no complaint was ever raised against her performance and it’s surprising why she should be victimized.

FIDA said the MPs should be reminded that they are not above the law and as key protectors of law must observe and adhere to the principles of the rule of law.

"As an organization we have, and continue to make several appeals to public officials and Kenyans at large to apply fair hearing and trial processes especially of women who have exhibited high competency and have been competitively nominated and/or appointed to office," read the statement.

FIDA says members of the National Assembly in executing their mandate must not employ any practices that are deliberately targeted at frustrating women leaders and making those who would wish to serve Kenyans shy away from public offices.

"We wish to remind the National Assembly to be objective in their assessment by not sending wrong signals to the public or be seen to intimidate prospective Government employees," said the statement.

FIDA said acts of victimization and intimidation should not be condoned by all Kenyans at a time when the country is struggling to achieve the two-thirds gender requirement.
