Bizzare cargo at port not mine, says Omingo Magara

By LUCAS NG’ASIKE

Former Trade Assistant Minister Omingo Magara has denied ownership of the alleged ‘satanic’ items that were impounded at the port of Mombasa.

Magara convened   a press conference last evening to distance himself from the cargo that Kenya Revenue Authority had claimed belonged to a senior politician from Nyanza.

He, however, confirmed that his wife imported houseware which coincidentally was delivered in the same container, something that could have linked him to the cargo.

‘“It’s true that my wife imported the items from China. But the importing agent consolidated the cargo with six other importers. Infact, not all goods imported in that container were shown on the TV except those categorised as unconventional,” Magara said.

Tarnishing name

The former Trade minister accused the Commissioner of Custom Beatrice Memo for tarnishing his name by linking him to the said cargo.

‘’It’s therefore vicious and malicious for the Commissioner of Customs to say that the items impounded at the port of Kilindini belonged to a senior Nyanza politician. Actually the description fitted me,” said the visibly outraged Magara.

The CMD chairman further said that it was wrong for the Customs boss  to declare that he went underground after the ‘satanic’ cargo was impounded at the port.

‘’In fact, no attempt was made by the KRA officials to contact me on phone or by other means,” added Magara.
