A middle aged woman alleged to have stabbed to death her two-year-old baby and later ate her internal body organs will be detained for 10 days to allow police complete investigations.

Kitengela Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Benson Mutia and the detectives handling the case had requested the court to allow them detain Olivia Naserian, 24, for 14 days.

However, Kajiado Principal Magistrate Jane Kamau ordered the woman to be presented in court on May 8.

Police said they need time to analyse her mobile phone to establish who she spoke to before committing the crime on Monday evening.

"We are grateful that we have been given more time for investigations. We also want to establish whether this woman is normal or she has a mental illness. What she did to her own baby is unexplainable,'' said Mutia.

Naserian, who remained calm in the dock, is accused of killing Gloria Njeri after she allegedly parted ways with the minor's father.

In a video clip that went viral on Monday night, a woman, who the police will have to identify, is captured stabbing the baby repeatedly while singing a lullaby.

Neighbors are seen watching through windows as she had locked herself inside the house.

In the two-minute-50-second video, they are heard shouting at the woman to stop killing the baby. But the stabbing goes on until the cries of the baby subside.

"The woman ate her baby's liver as we watched. This was horrific... She also removed other internal organs such as intestines and heart from the body before going unconscious,'' claims a neighbour.

A police officer who was among those who were at the scene said it took them more than 40 minutes to break into the house.

The officer said they used metal bars and other items to break the window to get access to the one-bedroom house.

Another neighbour described her "a very calm woman. I don't know what could have happened to her."

The woman was taken to the Kitengela Sub-County Hospital after she fell unconscious, while the baby's body were taken to Kitengela Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

The incident came two days after another in which a man stabbed to death her girlfriend at a popular eatery in the same town.
