Some children born out of wedlock end up on the streets because they are rejected by their families.
This is according to Lindi Ward Rep Samson Ochieng who shared his view when the Nairobi County Assembly was debating a motion to evict street families from the city.
The MCA said some married women become hostile when their husbands bring home children sired outside the marriage.
"Many men have kids out there but when they want to take them home they are not allowed. That is why these children end up on the streets," Ochieng told the assembly.
While supporting the proposal, he added, "This the matter that we must try to dig deeper and come up with solutions."
The motion tabled by Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege was passed by members awaiting a nod by the County Executive.
"Street children population in Nairobi County has increased over the years. This has thrust to a bleak, harsh, and depraved environment often burdened with constant and imminent danger in various forms," Chege told the assembly.
All members who supported the motion said the number of street children in the city has been growing with some of these families said to have migrated from neighbouring counties.
According to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census Report, Kenya had a total of 46,639 street persons.
Nairobi County was leading with 15,337 persons, Mombasa with 7,529, Kisumu with 2,746, Uasin Gishu with 2,147, and Nakuru with 2,005.
