Rotary College, Kisumu National Polytechnic and Commonwealth College emerged tops in the second edition of the Commonwealth College Sports tournament played at Lions High School in Kisumu.

Rotary College dethroned defending football champions Kasagam Secondary School after defeating them 4-3 in post-match penalties. The game ended 1-1 in regular time.

Nyanza Region Secondary School champions Kisumu Day High School saw off Nairobi Aviation 4-3 on penalties to finish third after finishing 0-0 in regular time.

This year's edition attracted a total of 22 participants with a record 12 team in football namely Thika Medical, KCA University, Rotary College, Commonwealth College, Kasagam Secondary, Nairobi Aviation, Lions High, Cardiff United among others.

Kisumu Poly won the overall volleyball title after finishing top of the round robin group with 12 points. They defeated Lions High, Kasagam Youth and Commonwealth.

On the other hand, Commonwealth College won the netball title in a two game playoffs between them and Lions High School.

Sponsored by Commonwealth College, the tournament's main objective was to nurture sports talents in schools and revive sports again after two years of absence.

Tournament Director Michael Juma said they are targeting to expand the tourney next year outside Kisumu County to attract more teams as they aim to promote sports in colleges just as they excel in academics.

"We have noticed most colleges in Kenya are not sports structured as they leave co-curriculum to universities and secondary schools. This has to change because sports is important just as academics.

"Our goal is to grow in both and we want to inspire other colleges to join in and let us promote sports," said Juma.
