NAIROBI: First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has received visual presentations and artistic impressions of the proposed Sh2.2 billion referral hospital.
Construction of the hospital, under the First Lady's Beyond Zero initiative, is expected to start soon.
Architects from Lexicon+IONn presented the visual impressions to Mrs Kenyatta and the Beyond Zero Secretariat On August 24.
The 150-bed facility will stand on a 20,000-square-metre land. It will also include a seven-bed Intensive Care Unit and specially landscaped therapeutic gardens.
It will use locally available natural materials and solar energy for lighting. Rain water will be harvested and treated for daily use.
The hospital will also have both blood and human milk banks - a new concept in modern hospitals.
It will be flexible in location, construction and equipping. There will be special care for those with physical and sensory challenges.
The hospital will be all-inclusive facility but focuses on mothers and children. There will be additional facilities for emotional wellness for those rescued from gender violence and Female Genital Mutilation.
"You got it (concept) right. I love it. I can see it already. Thank you", said Mrs Kenyatta during the presentation.
Mrs Kenyatta conceived the idea in August last year after a visit to the ultra-modern Aiiku Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, which specialises in maternal and child healthcare.
