Mombasa rookie claims Kambasome title at Mombasa Golf Course

Little-known Mombasa golfer Peter Cheruiyot surprised colleagues after he emerged the overall winner of the Kambasome golf tournament at the par 71 sea-link Mombasa Golf Club, on Saturday.

The handicap 28 golfer returned an excellent 41 stableford points to be crowned the champion in the day-long 18 holes stableford tournament that brought together 180 golfers.

Despite scratching two holes at the par three-seventh and the par three-16th holes, Cheruiyot overcame the torture by posting four level pars against a mixed bogey shots on the rest of the holes in both nines to claim the lead.

"I have never been at the podium to give a winner's speech. Today has been my day despite suffering a lot on the course with greens vibrating my golf balls, but it has also been a day full of fun and I am excited for the victory. I thank my playing partners, organisers and the sponsors for making this be to a wonderful day," said Cheruiyot.

Elvis Nduati, playing off handicap 20, was the Men winner with a countback score of 40 points, tying on the same score with handicap 16 Joel Mochanga, who was the runner-up. Handicap 19 Elijah Ibua was third after returning 39 points.

Machakos Golf Club's lady golfer handicap 28 Scola Onsonga scooped the Lady's title with 40 points, beating home club's handicap 27 Caroline Munyi to the runner-up slot by a seven points difference.

Handicap 26 Faith Muteti brought 32 points to finish third.

Home club's upcoming lady golfer Petronilah Kalee, playing off handicap 28, was the Kambasome team winner with a score of 36 points, while handicap 20 Paul Munyao, on 35 points, and handicap 27 Joseph Kitema, with 33 points, finished second and third respectively.

Brian Warui, playing off handicap 48, went home smiling after claiming the high handicappers men prize from his 33 points, while handicap 46 Diana Nthiwa was the lady winner on 39 points. School boy handicap 20 Fidel Wasike was the junior winner after returning a score of 27 points.

Despite hard work and determination, all golfers missed the "hole in one" shot.

It's only veteran golfer Martin Wahome who came close, with only 1.1 feet away from the 18th hole.

The tournament, which was dominated by top yellow and bottom white, was organised by Mombasa based "Wakwitu" golfers to celebrate Kamba's culture.

Club Chairman Paul Munyao and Club Captain James Gitonga thanked the Sponsors and Golfers for making the event successful saying that it was a day of celebration of Culture with diversity and making friendship.

'Wakwitu" golfers Captain Joseph Kitema said the aim of the event is to promote the Kamba culture and promised that they will be back next year in a much bigger and better way.

Meanwhile Mercy Nyanchama and B.Kahniri carded 44 points to emerge the overall winners of the 2023 Kabete Ladies Invitation golf tournament played at Vetlab Sports course on Saturday.

The event was jointly sponsored by Bayer East Africa, the Agha Khan University Hospital, AAR Healthcare, ICEALION, KWAL, Sense of Africa, Zana Leather Craft, Jon-Hansen and K-Link.

The team of Grace Waiganjo and S.Muraguri were the runners up on 41 points while Mary Mburu and R.Kigathi cam third with 39 points.

The Special Category winners were Sarah Bisera and Rebecca Mbinya who had 39 points while the Sponsor prize was won by handicap 14 B. Muthui Mutisya who had 35points.

Francis Wahome playing off handicap 6 was the Subsidiary men winner on a count back score of 40 points , tying on the same score with handicap 12 Boniface Mungai who was the runners up while handicap 18 Simon Mbugua with 37 points and handicap 13 Sarah Nyareru with 35 points were third and Subsidiary Lady winner respectively.
