Zetech University stage big party for triumphant football teams

Zetech University yesterday celebrated the achievements of their men and women’s football teams in an awards ceremony held at Ruiru Campus.

The men and women’s football teams were feted for excelling in the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) and Universities and Colleges Football League (UCFL) leagues. The two sides were at the weekend crowned 2018-2019 KUSA Nairobi champions.

The men’s team had earlier on bagged the 2018 UCFL title while the ladies also staged a brilliant performance finishing second. Zetech ladies won the title in style to qualify for the national playoffs set for this month at United States International University of Africa (USIU-A).

They were in perfect form winning the trophy on an unbeaten run and team coach Benard Kitolo said that they were looking forward to a better performance at the national playoffs.

“Playing football is more of learning for our students and the moment they all understood that winning has been easy for us. We enjoy winning but above all, it is the lessons we learn from every match that has resulted in our good run and we hope to become better and also excel at the national playoffs,” Kitolo said.  

Most players are beneficiaries of the University sports scholarship program introduced in 2012 that has so far seen 500 talented and needy students benefit from awarded over Sh7M. This semester, over Kshs. 700, 000 was awarded to 30 students undertaking different courses.

In the men’s contest, Zetech Titans topped the league table in the 2018-2019 KUSA Nairobi gong.  They beat rivals the University Of Nairobi and Africa Nazarene University to snatch bragging rights.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics and Student Affairs Dr. Alice Njuguna highlighted the value of investing in talent development to enable students to excel both in class and on the field.  

“The Zetech family is proud of our teams as they continue to impress in national leagues. Winning these championships reflects their skills and discipline and I believe they will do us proud at the national playoffs,” Njuguna said.

She added that the scholarship program is designed to provide talented, needy students with an opportunity to grow talent while accessing quality higher education.   

“Our scholarships are awarded every semester to successful applicants who have met the minimum requirements as set by the sports committee and is purely based on talent, financial need, academic qualifications. The students must also continue to excel in class and pitch to maintain their scholarship.”

The University’s focus is to ensure students benefit from a holistic university experience by nurturing their talent and giving them quality education to ensure that they well equipped for the future.
