How to rejuvenate your hair when it stops growing

Hair

No matter how great your haircare regimen is, there may come a time when its growth hits a plateau. You have been doing everything to ensure healthy hair, but you are still at the same length of five years ago.

This is the stage where your hair hits its maximum length, even though it's much shorter than what you want. Genetics does sometimes play a part in how long one's hair grows. These are some of the reasons your hair has reached a length plateau.

Regimen: Keep it simple and avoid complications. Your hair may not respond well to elaborate high-tech regimen that you watch on You Tube. Focus on practices that make your hair grow, including drinking enough water and consuming the correct nutrients for a healthy lifestyle that will boost your hair growth. Let your hairdresser recommend the best regimen for your hair type.

Manipulation: You may be doing too much to your hair. Hair is fragile and thus requires as much rest as possible. It is our hair's natural tendency to break off if it is not given a chance to rest; keep your hands off as they can add stress to the hair, weakening its elasticity and leading to breakage, thinning and severe damage.

Deep conditioning: If you don't deep-condition regularly, your hair growth is affected as it lacks moisture. Hair thrives under the right conditions. Deep conditioning once a week, is necessary for the strengthening process of your hair. If your goal is to retain length and make it grow, start paying more attention to this aspect of your regimen.

Product ingredients: Don't just use any product on your hair for the sake of it or because it worked on someone else's hair. Some ingredients in certain products could be eating away the progress you have made. Check product labels to see if there is anything that could be contributing to breakage. Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Never introduce concoctions or commercial products you have heard of through the grapevine. The next thing you hear is that there is even a better product and you try it; your hair will probably protest. It needs time to adjust to what you are using on it right now.

Cute hairstyles over protective styling: This is not advisable if you want your hair to grow. Beautiful hairstyles have a counter effect on length retention, and thus protective styling is always recommended. So bite the bullet, give your hair a break and go back to protective styling. You will reap the rewards.

Too much heat: Avoid heat tools including blow-dryers and flat irons that are likely to damage your hair. Direct use of heat on your hair can be the main reason your hair is stuck at a hair length plateau.

Poor lifestyle: Diet and exercise are also important for your hair growth. Your hair needs the right nutrients. Eating foods high in nutritional value like fish, nuts, and vegetables help your hair become healthier and longer. Regular physical exercise is also essential for the overall health of your hair.

Time to trim: When hair is severely damaged by split ends and heat damage, there is no cure for it apart from trimming. Otherwise, it will not grow no matter what products that claim to "repair damaged hair" you use. When you trim the ends, it grows faster and has a thicker appearance.
