BUNGOMA: A ward representative allied to the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has filed an impeachment motion against Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka.
Ndalu Ward MCA Ben Namaswa has cited corruption as the main issue that has necessitated him to file the motion seeking to kick out Mr Lusaka.
He also blamed the governor for failing to initiate development projects that can benefit the locals.
MISUSE OF RESOURCES
“The purchase of expensive wheelbarrows is one of the many graft cases. That is misuse of resources that could have been used for other lucrative projects,” said Mr Namaswa.
Bungoma County Assembly Clerk John Mosongo acknowledged having received the motion, saying he forwarded it to Speaker John Makali.
“The motion was brought to my office by Hon Ben Namaswa. I forwarded the same to the speaker.
The motion will the signatures of 21 members for it to be tabled on the floor of the assembly but it will need 44 members for it to be forwarded to the Senate,” said Mr Mosongo.
Bungoma County Assembly has 63 members, 35 of them from the ruling Jubilee and 28 from CORD.
A source from CORD divulged to The Standard that 19 signatures had already been collected by last Friday to facilitate the tabling of the motion.
Speaker John Makali has also acknowledged receiving the letter.
However, South Bukusu MCA David Fwaro and his Kamukuywa Ward counterpart Moses Opicho, both Jubilee leaders, were quick to defend Lusaka.
They said it would be a tall order for the Opposition to impeach the governor.
“The Opposition has to few numbers to succeed in impeaching the governor, unless miracles happen. On this we can bet CORD will not succeed,” said Mr Fwaro.
Mr Opicho said the Opposition was hellbent on disrupting the county development agenda through initiation of impeachment which would hit a brick wall.
“They have realised that their efforts to control the assembly has failed therefore they are looking for a way of causing confusion so that the governor fails to deliver,” said Opicho.
NOT A FAILURE
Governor Lusaka urged the Opposition to give him time to serve the electorate instead of disrupting his development agenda.
“We are midway through our term but they are trying to depict me as a failure but I have played my role very well to the satisfaction of everyone,” said Lusaka.
