Handbags are important because they speak volumes about you. It is an extension of who you are, and so women feel emotional about a handbag in a way no man will ever understand.

Years ago it was fashionable to carry as little as possible, so handbags were tiny. But nowadays they are big enough to hold everything you need for the day. Phone, keys, tissues, money, make-up, mirror, pen, receipts; sunglasses, snacks, documents, ID, medicine, tampons, plasters, letters, diaries, spare knickers and even tools. And maybe sentimental stuff like a lock of a child's hair, confetti from your wedding, or a pebble from a holiday beach.
And how do you carry your bag? By the handles? Over a shoulder? Tucked under your arm? Many women clutch their bags like something soft and cuddly, in effect saying: "My bag is part of me. Everything important to me is in here!" You want it close because it holds your life.
Bags have also always been a fashion statement. Women invariably notice each other's and consider a compliment about their own to be the ultimate flattery.
Which is why upmarket handbags are so seductive. Their designers create subtle ads that say: "Buy me and everyone will know you have arrived." Like a picture of a smiling woman, toting a beautiful Prada bag, alongside a handsome man. Implying that if you buy the handbag you will be her, complete with her perfect husband!
But designer handbags are gorgeous. Despite all the marketing hype, you still have a beautiful object in your hands. So enjoy the pleasure it brings.
Do not worry about your husband's lack of enthusiasm. No man ever understands handbags!
