Handicap 12 Jazz Sokhi beat a field of over 55 golfers to emerge the overall winner of the Cooper Motors Corporation (CMC) tournament at the Par 70 Nyanza Golf Club.
Sokhi posted 20 Stableford points in the first nine and added another 21 in the second nine for an impressive 41 total in the event dominated by home players.
“I’m delighted with this win and I thank CMC for sponsoring the tournament. Winning a tournament in the first day of the month is amazing, the course was tough but I managed to play well which worked to my favour,” Said Sokhi.
Playing off handicap 25, Rana Ali Sultan, finished second after posting 40 points. He was followed by former Nyanza Golf Captain Tobby See. Playing off handicap 22, See registered 38 points. He was followed by Janet Kalavor who also emerged the ladies winner after posting 37 Stableford points.
First nine winner was handicap nine Lucas Nyambogo who posted 21 points, while the second nine winner was Dr. Rosemary Obara who posted 23 points.
The tournament was attended by CMC’s Richard Kyalo, David Wamathu and Dennis Muzungu.
Booked finale ticket
Meanwhile, home player Charles Ondieki led his team to victory at the 16th leg of the ongoing Dasani Golf Gala at the nine-hole Kisii Golf Club.
In the process, Ondiek booked a ticket to the tournament’s Grand Finale on September 29 at the Karen Golf and Country Club.
Ondieki, playing off handicap 12, managed a score of 41 points, while handicap eight Charles Aburi contributed 38 points. Jeneby Onyambu posted 35 points, while club captain Andrew Kombo was the team’s weakest link on 31 points. They managed a team score of 114 points.
Finished second
Speaking on behalf of the winning team on Saturday, Aburi said: “Last year, we finished second in the same competition and this forced us to return to the drawing board and here are the results today. We have started our journey to Dubai, we are going to dedicate at least three days practice in a week in the run-up to the Grand Finale. We have Dubai in sight and we will give it our best shot,” said Aburi.
The second team was made up of handicap 11 Cosmas Kebuse who posted 38 points, George Mainye who contributed 36 points and Christopher Maato who scored 34 points. Wycliff Ayienda was the team’s weakest link on 22 points for a combined score of 108 points.
The reserve team from the Kisii leg consisted of J Matara (39), G Bichage (35), N Netty (32) and J Momanyi (23) on a team score of 106 points.
Handicap 26 Naftali Otuke from Vet Lab Golf Club was the tournament’s guest winner on 29 points. Charles Aburi won the nearest to the pin credit, while Kericho’s Virdee Gurdit won the men’s longest drive prize. Nicholas Netty won the first nine prize, while James Matara won the second nine prize.
Dasani action moves to Muthaiga Golf Club this weekend.
