Is Noordin Haji under political pressure to withdraw graft cases?

The latest string of withdrawals of high profile corruption cases has raised speculation that Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji could have been pressured into terminating corruption cases against individuals linked to President William Ruto.

On October 12, the DPP withdrew a Sh19 million graft case against Aisha Jumwa, now the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Public Service and Gender. The case is in relation to alleged misappropriation of CDF funds. On the same day, the DPP also dropped charges against former Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chum and 10 others. Perhaps the most notable case set to be terminated is the Sh7.3 billion corruption case against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and nine others.

However, the more urgent question of constitutional relevance is the reason(s) for termination of the said cases. The inattentiveness to the reasons underpinning the withdrawal of the corruption cases is fuelling speculation about political interference in the prosecutorial mandate of the DPP.
