Johnny Depp who plays Jack Sparrow makes a return in an overly exhausted Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The fifth edition dubbed ‘Dead men tell no tales’ features a ship of ghost sailors on the hunt for Jack Sparrow over a past wrong that killed them. Led by the weirdly fascinating Captain Salazar, the ghost ship escapes its prison, the Devil's Triangle, and in its hunt for Jack, plunders other ships in a very extra-terrestrial manner. Pretty much gobbles the ships up.
Jack on the other hand has to find the legendary Trident of Poseidon which would save him and break the curses. To do this, he forges an alliance with a young female astronomer and a young man trying to bring his father back.
Thumbs Up
Captain Salazar is by far one of the best characters in this movie. His vengeful, evil and visually unappealing self is peppered with charm and sometimes humor. His scenes are the most captivating and did a great job saving the movie. The monkey was a charmer too.
There are some funny moments and great visuals.
Thumbs Down
Jack Sparrow is tired! His acting is so exhausting and humor too dry. He comes off as a slobbering, heavily mascarad drunk.
The 135 minute long flick features several moments of little action to the point where it feels too long. The moments that keep you attentive are few and far in between.
Did I mention the movie is in 2D?
Verdict
The plot was substandard, the ending even worse. One can only hope that this is indeed the end to an already tired franchise.
