The national women’s football team Harambee Starlets stormed into the semifinals of the ongoing fifth edition of COTIF Women Football Tournament in Valencia, Spain, following CF Benfica’s 2-0 defeat to Espanyol on Monday night.
The second consecutive defeat to Benfica means Starlets will grace the semifinals of the tournament regardless of their performance against Espanyol. Starlets picked a 3-0 win over Benfica in their opening match on Sunday night and were leading group A with three points before taking on Espanyol but had an inferior goal difference.
Speaking to Feverpitch, Harambee Starlets custodian Vivian Akinyi said the first match was tough despite not conceding a goal and she hopes the team will do well. “The match was tough despite the win but then we are now focusing on remaining matches,” said Akinyi who also features for Women Premier League side Soccer Sisters.
That was Akinyi’s second match at the national side following her exploits back in 2015 where the team played against Tanzania in an international friendly match where they posted a one-all draw.
Only two teams from each group will advance from the two groups and with the results, it means both Harambee Starlets and Espanyol are through to the semifinals.
In group B, Venezuela booked a semifinal slot after a 1-0 win over Spanish side Elche CF in their second match. Venezuela picked their first win of the tournament with a 2-0 over Spanish side Betis.
