I burnt my son’s itchy fingers — Dad

A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to serve three years behind bars after pleading guilty to pouring paraffin on his son and burning him.

Eric Otieno, a machine operator was convicted for unlawfully causing grievous harm to his eight-year-old son on November 31 last year in Industrial Area. The court heard that Otieno arrived home from work on the material day and found his two sons eating bread and soda.

Otieno reportedly lost his cool after his eldest son confessed to stealing the snacks from a neighbour’s kiosk. It was then that he allegedly sent the elder son to buy Sh10 paraffin before tying and burning him for his ‘sins’.

The prosecution said he poured paraffin on the boy’s body and lit the fire before shoving him into the bathroom.

The minor cried in pain as he struggled to get out of the bathroom. His elder brother poured cold water on him in an attempt to put out the fire. The minor was then rushed to a nearby clinic. He sustained injuries on his hands, legs and abdomen.

The minor was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was admitted. The suspect asked the court for forgiveness saying he was drunk when he committed the offence.
