Clephas Ng’etich and Volarie Jemeli yesterday won senior races at the 25th University of Eldoret cross country meeting.

Africa cross country junior silver medalist Andrew Lorot and little known Gladys Chemaiyo also triumphed in the junior races at the windswept cross country circuit within the university’s sports grounds.

It was particularly sweet victory for US-based Ng’etich, who is fresh from winning Tennessee Cross Country and finishing seventh at the Ndalat Gaa Cross Country meeting last week.

He stormed into the lead from the gun, opening a wide gap even as Kiprono Kurgat, who trains with him in the USA, mounted a challenge.

Ng’etich, who comes from Kapsabet and trains under Gerard Van de Veen of Volare Sports, wore the composure of an experienced athlete as he employed an electric pace to win in 29:38.30.

Kurgat checked in second in 29:54:19 as Elias Kemboi sealed the podium places in 30:02:30.

Cross country regular Philip Kiprono was fourth in 30:08:42, Elias Lagat (30:10:60) and David Kwemoi (30:16:66) completed the top six finishers.

Ng’etich, who won the 2014 Nebles half marathon in USA, said the win was not easy for him since he arrived into the country a day before the Ndalat Gaa cross country.

Valerie Jemeli, a marathon specialist, won the senior women race in 27:18:4 as Judith Kiyeng (27:19:7), Linah Jeruto (27:28:7) and Janet Masai (27:36:9) trailed. Veronica Jepkosgey (27:45:6) and Gladys kemboi (28:51:9) followed.

“The winds were too strong but I came here to prepare for Gabon marathon next month,” said Jemeli, who boasts a sub 2:30 42km personal best mark set in Reims in France.

Lorot, fresh from winning Ndalat Gaa Kids cross country last week, won the 8km junior men race in 23:35.4.

Lorot, who studied at Nairobi’s Riruta High School, now targets the upcoming KCB/AK cross country jackpot series as he won in 23:35:4 while Michael Bett (23:35:19) and Peter Kipkoech (23:43:4) followed. Chemaiyo won junior women race in 20:4:09 followed by Gloria Kite (20:52:87) and Dorcas Jepchumba in 21:19:4.
