Meet Jeremy Wahome: Our first Formula 1 star!

 Jeremy Wahome

Kenya may soon have one of its own racing at the most revered Formula 1 competition.

In what seems to be yet another triumph, Kenya is indeed a hotbed of talent. Our very own 16-year-old Jeremy Wahome is doing just fine at the famous Formula BMW Asia Cup Series.

In August, Jeremy took part in the BMW Asia Cup Series where he successfully achieved three rookie wins, two second place finishes and one third place finish at the Formula BMW Asia Cup Series held at the world famous Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. On his Facebook post just before transiting to the Asia Cup Series, Wahome posted:

“Glad to announce that I will be making the step up from go karts to cars and I will be taking part in the Formula BMW Asia Cup series.

The Asia cup series is a championship designed for young drivers who want to make the step up from karts to cars. I’m really excited to be the first Kenyan to take part in the championship alongside many other competitors from all over the world and can’t wait!”

“Participating in the Asia Cup series is a great experience for me as I got to learn a lot on and off the track. I enjoyed close wheel to wheel racing with my competitors,” Jeremy told the press at the time.

The one-time go kart racer represented the county in various championships including the Rotax Africa Open in Pretoria, South Africa in September 2014. He has since graduated to ‘real’ cars.

Well, his tenacity has not failed him given he managed a first ever Formula 1 car podium finish - in his first four races that took place on August 28-30, 2015.

“I thank God for these results and for giving me the opportunity to chase my dream of becoming a Formula 1 world champion. I look forward to my upcoming races and promise more to come,” said Jeremy.

The Asia Cup series is a championship specifically designed for young drivers who intend to transit from kart racing to cars and to ultimately gain entry into the world famous Formula 1 racing championships.
