The earliest I remember of dreadlocks was the freedom fighters Mau Mau. Then, and even up to a few years back, the method of creating dreadlocks was letting the natural hair grow without ever combing it. In the long run, the hair would tangle into long twisted ropes of hair. This process, however, takes years for one to achieve the look. It is now faster to achieve the dreadlocks look today — the process is much shorter and can be done using backcombing and special wax. For a long time, dreadlocks were associated with Rastafarians; people who were thought to be rowdy and in some instances marijuana addicts. In the recent past, however, they have become a normal look that can be worn even to the office. You, however, need to realise the office look dreadlocks should be more formal and, therefore, should be well maintained.
• Before thinking of getting dreadlocks, be sure you are conversant with the dress code of your workplace. Some organisations do not allow staff to have dreadlocks. If you work for one that prohibits dreadlocks, you may have to change your look by picking another hairstyle or just opt out and seek an organisation that has a less strict dress code.
• If you are allowed to wear dreads, keep it simple. This way, you will still be able to maintain a professional look and make a statement about your personality and style.
• Never let your dreadlocks hang on your face. Tie them into a pony or plait them neatly going backwards. If your job involves customer service, your dreadlocks must always be tied at the nape of your neck.
• Always find ways of containing your dreadlocks as much as possible.
• Remember to keep your dreadlocks neat and clean. Spray them and also take care of your scalp.
