NAIROBI, KENYA: Seven passengers died when a Public Service Vehicle and a lorry collided along the Nairobi-Kangundo road on Monday evening.
Seven other passengers are admitted in hospital with multiple injuries. Of these, two are in ICU with serious head injuries, police said.
Of those who died three are female, three male and a child. The accident happened at about 6 pm involving the lorry that was ferrying sand and a matatu.
Kayole police commander Samuel Mukindia said the vehicles collided head-on in Kamulu, near Ruai market.
“We have reports the lorry was overtaking a saloon car when it collided with the matatu headed on the opposite direction,” said Mukindia.
He added the driver of the matatu was among those who died on the spot. This is the latest accident to be recorded in the country as the government struggles to address the menace.
So far, more than 2,000 people have been killed in road accidents since January in rising cases that seem to be uncontrollable.
Monday’s accident adds the statistics of those who have been killed and injured in the accidents that have been blamed on speeding and drivers’ error.
