By Crystal Okusa

One of Kenya’s biggest Classical concerts is going down next weekend graced by an international British award-winning acappella octet, Voces8. Sponsored by Safaricom, among other corporates, the three-day show will be held in Nairobi at the National Museum of Kenya on April 17, and April 19 at the Impala Grounds. On April 18, the performance will be in Mombasa at the Bat Cave, Leisure Lounge. The Nairobi Chamber Chorus will curtain raise.

Voces8, who first achieved their success after winning first prize at the International Choral Grand Prix in Gorizia, Italy, in 2005, perform a repertoire ranging from early polyphony to unique jazz and popular arrangements. Founded in 2003, the group is widely praised around UK and Europe for their exquisite singing and great range in vocal colour.

They are known for their famous releases From Gibbons to Gershwin and Snowed In. Voces8 will make a stop over in Kenya during their around the world tour after Wartburg Castle, Germany, and USA. Voces8 have also participated in teaching students through innovative workshops in schools throughout UK and master classes and projects with people of all ages and abilities, with the aim of inspiring creativity through music.

The weekend fusion concert will also feature Kenya’s best and most talented performers, composers and orchestras.

Top performers

Expected to perform at various shows are Levi Wataka, who will be the concert’s conductor, together with Kenya Conservatoire of Music Orchestra, The Safaricom Choir, Legendary Singers, Nairobi Orchestra and Nairobi Chamber Chorus Kachumbari Seven and Kenyatta University Choir.

Also set to light the stage are Eric Wainaina, the Moipei Girls Quartet, Grace Nangabo, violinist Fred Pessa and Elizabeth Njoroge among others. Outgoing German Ambassador Walter Lindner will also be in attendance

The growing genre of music that is more instruments oriented has become accepted in the society and not just for the elite, as was earlier perceived. It has seen the rise of young talent and great voices that have represented Kenya across the world. Most of the classical singers passion began at a tender age and some have dropped their careers to take up classical music or even teach music.
