Tick Tock…The Biological clock

Lady Speak

Your biological clock is ticking faster and louder every day and as if that isn't enough pressure, society has deemed it absolutely unacceptable for women of a certain age to be unmarried. Fear not ladies because this is the age of the driverless cars and the Caitlyn Jenner's of the world so anything is possible. Your options are limitless.

So what exactly am I talking about? There are different ways to get pregnant that don't involve sex. If you haven't found the "right one" or you'd just rather go it on your own there are several avenues to get to baby town. More and more women are making the decision to take their future into their own their own hands.

Sperm banks are slowly gaining ground in Kenya with many women realizing that you don't need a man to have a baby. Before you cringe in disgust just hear me out. Simply put a sperm bank is a facility where frozen donor sperm samples are stored. This sperm is used to help a woman get pregnant via donor insemination. This is a procedure where a fine tube or syringe with the donor sperm inside is inserted into the vagina, cervix or uterus during the woman's ovulation window.

You have the option of choosing an anonymous donor or using sperms from someone you know. However, Dr Wanjiru Ndegwa-Njuguna a fertility specialist at Footsteps to Fertility center said that using an anonymous donor is recommended because sometimes a known baby daddy may skip out. She added that an increasing number of single women aged between 25 and 45 are visiting the fertility clinic.

According to the International Committee for Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technology more than 3 million babies have been born through assisted reproductive technology.
