Help! My house help is on WhatsApp

Some time last year, I shared on this platform how my house girl sent me a friend request on Facebook. I was shocked that she was not only on Facebook but she had the audacity to send me a friend request.

For starters my househelp is called Mwende and I have been with her for more than two years. Her strengths are she is a hardworking, respectful, and great with my two kids, a good cook and very kind-hearted. Her weaknesses are few – she is ridiculously beautiful and damn brilliant.

Mwende is those nice looking ‘yellow yellows’. She causes traffic in my house among my husband’s male friends who come to visit just to see her. That’s a story for another day. Her second strength is her brilliance.

So brilliant is Mwende, she comfortably shows my Class Eight niece those difficult arithmetic that would give an accomplished career mum chills. That’s also for another day. Now with her brilliance also comes her “tech-savvyness.”

Last year she made her debut on Facebook and now she has landed on Whatsapp with a bang! For my peace of mind, though I have the app, I rarely check what is going on there. But the other day, I was scrolling through my contacts list to admire people’s profile pictures.

As I scrolled through, I spotted Mwende’s pretty self, posing seductively. It was like she was telling one of her admirers, ‘hey look how hot I am’. And it is like these profile pictures are changed every minute. “So when does she take these pictures and what time does she attend to the baby?” I wondered.

And I suspect those poses are for the new gate man. The way she talks to him every time he comes to collect the security money speaks volumes. Oh these girls. So easy to lure.

Anyhow, my rant today is this, just what do house girls do on Facebook and WhatsApp?

I believe a focused house girl who knows what brought her in Nairobi, has no business spending time on such social media platforms. What for? I believe a househelp ought to be focused and not allow herself to be distracted by these luxuries that accomplished mamas enjoy.

A domestic worker should know what brought her to that house and stick to her lane otherwise she will lose direction. Talking of focus, I was particularly impressed the other day by a house girl who scored a cool B in last year’s KCSE and now she is set on advancing her studies.

Yes that is the kind of girl who will go far and she will not die a househelp but will achieve greater things in this life. I am sure for that girl to have enrolled back to school and scored that impressive grade, she had to ignore distractions like social media and focus on the goal - exams.

I am sure in her free time, instead of logging online to snoop on what her boss is doing on Facebook, she buried her head in books. I wish all househelps were that focused.
