The rate at which hair grows is relative to an individual’s genetics and age. However, the one thing we have control over is our diet because consuming foods that lack the right nutrients can cause hair loss.

Here are five foods that you probably already eat regularly and will want to consume more of once you know their benefits.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a breakfast staple for many Kenyans. This makes them excellent because they improve the health of hair. They are rich in vitamin A which contributes to tissue growth.

Areas of the body where hair connects to body tissues help it grow faster. How this works is that vitamin A increases the production of sebum which is natural oil produced by the body that helps keep hair healthy.

Beans

Beans are another Kenyan household staple. These seeds are a healthy plant-based source of protein which helps promote hair growth. They also contain zinc, biotin, iron and folate. Zinc helps with the hair’s natural repair cycle as well as growth. Biotin is a great source of the B-vitamin which also helps strengthen nails.

Instead of spending your precious money on vitamin B tablets and biotin hair supplements, opt for beans which are a more affordable and easily accessible alternative.

Shrimp

Shrimp is a seafood that is enriched with vitamin D, B vitamins, protein, iron, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin D3 deficiency causes hair loss, of which shrimp is rich in. Omega-3 fatty acids, which shrimp has, have been linked to an increase in hair growth.

Next time you’re out grocery shopping or dining at a restaurant, treat yourself to some shrimp.

Spinach

What’s not to love about spinach? Interestingly enough, spinach is practically a natural hair conditioner - when consumed and not applied directly onto the hair. Iron is a very prevalent element in spinach which helps red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. The result of this is an increase of metabolism as well as hair growth and repair.

In addition to this, the leafy green plant helps hair look lustrous and shiny with the help of omega-3, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. Just like sweet potatoes, vitamin A in spinach helps with sebum production which keeps hair healthy.

Beetroot
There is plenty of iron, minerals, antioxidants and potassium in beetroots (Shutterstock)

This red vegetable literally prevents hair loss by tightening the pores on your scalp thanks to the potassium in it. It also helps boost hair growth because it is packed with protein, vitamin B, vitamin C and calcium.

Additionally, there is plenty of iron, minerals, antioxidants and potassium in beetroots so load up in this ruby, red vegetable for healthy, shiny hair.
