Eight fashion rules you shouldn’t worry about

Fashion Tips

Fashion has always been a very personal thing. There’s no one who can dictate what you can and can’t wear, and everyone is free to choose what they want. While all that’s true, we do know that certain unspoken fashion rules are still practiced today. Like, you shouldn’t wear a white gown as a guest at a wedding or you shouldn’t wear revealing outfits to work. Most people know the basics.

Still, we have those rules that just don’t make much sense anymore. Feel free to rip this list of fashion rules anytime without fear or judgement.

Only wear what’s in style

Trends and fads are slowly overtaking the fashion scene. If you’re not careful you’ll be sucked in slowly and lose your own personal style and identity.

You should be able to express yourself through what you wear because you’re not obligated to wear the latest trends. You should definitely consider collecting some classic designs even from the 70’s and 80’s and make them your own. Besides, fashion always repeats itself.

Always dress your age

Yes, this should go without saying that you should dress in an age appropriate way. You don’t want to end up looking tacky or like you’re going through a midlife crisis.

At the same time, you should look into different sections at your fav store to find some amazing outfit ideas. There’s no problem wearing a leather jacket or skinny jeans, which are often associated with the young and hip crowd, when you’re 60. How you pair it will determine whether it’s a hit or miss.

Never mix two prints

The rule that two or more prints should never be mixed is outdated now. In the past, people did not know how to master the art of mixing patterns unlike now when you can get tips all over.

Mixing prints isn’t for everyone through, but everyone can learn how to do it either way.

Red and pink should never be matched

I grew up knowing that red and pink are a no-no. Blame it on the terrible advice from blogs back then. Right now I’ve realized that that’s not necessarily true. Well, it won’t work if you mix two screaming shades of red and pink since they’re both contrasting.

You can, however, start with combining a bright shade of either the two with a softer, more subtle shade of the other. Get it?

Short women can’t wear maxi dresses

Now this one gets me laughing really hard. I’m really not sure who prohibited short women from wearing maxi dresses but I’m sure you’ve probably had this this ridiculous rule from somewhere. Sure, it can sometimes overwhelm the frame but that all depends on the design and how you wear it. Anyone can wear a maxi dress as long as it flatters your curves.

All your jewelry has to match

It was thought to be stylish when you wore a whole matching set of pearl earrings with its necklace and bracelets. In this new fashion era, it’s just tacky. Wearing unique prices when layering necklaces or combining different rings brings out a more aesthetic look to your outfit. Each piece can complement each other without overpowering.

You must shop in your section

You’ll never know what you’re missing out on if you don’t look at the different sections. You can briefly go to the men’s section the next time you’re out shopping and maybe you’ll spot some great pieces you wouldn’t have seen in the ladies’ section. No one will bother you or ask you why you’re going to look at the men’s section so don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone.

Tall women shouldn’t wear heels

This is another one of those petty fashion rules that have made rounds for a long time. Tall women are being judged for not sticking to flats and that has contributed to the feeling of shame for towering over everyone with heels.

That rule is ridiculous and you shouldn’t have to deny yourself a closet full of heels you love just to make others feel comfortable.

For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
