If there's one thing that makes the world hopping mad, it's the older lady + younger man love equation. Yet, the same Rumpelstiltskin hopping from leg to leg-type rage you see is curiously absent when it’s an old bloke with a younger model. I know, right? Shocking. So, Naomi Campbell (48) may or may not be dating Liam Payne (25) and the whole thing seems to have caused a major disruption in the space time continuum. Oh, hang on, not that – I meant it has caused major hypocrisy in the everybody shut up forever, please.
People are throwing hissy fits they never threw when great-grandfather Mick Jagger (75) had a baby with Melanie Hamrick (32). Or when Duncan Bannatyne, 70, married, Nigora, 38. Or Ronnie Wood, 71, wed Sally Humphreys, 41. French actor Vincent Cassel, 52, got hitched to a 21 year old. Global silence.
If you are congratulating these men, yet getting judgey about Liomi (That’s Liam and Naomi, I think it’ll catch on) please go to the nearest mirror and take a long hard look at yourself.
And it’s not just in real life – even on screen, older woman/younger man moments are intolerable, it seems. After 100+ years of cinema history, which includes Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson canoodling with women young enough to be their great-great-not-born-yet-granddaughters who’ve travelled back from the future, Bogart and Bacall, and Richard Gere with 18-years-his-junior Julia Roberts, ONE Netflix hit film, Bird Box, had an older woman hooking up with a younger man and it caused controversy. Yes, in her latest blockbuster, the sight of Sandra Bullock, 54, making out with divine actor Trevante Rhodes, 29, caused people to question the realisticness of this relationship given the age gap. Someone hold me back…
So, who exactly is protesting?
It’s not the fine older women getting these hot, feminist young men. My boyfriend is nine years younger than me, so I can speak for this group. It’s not these hot young men getting beautiful, bold, no-nonsense older women. It’s not the young women – even though they are the ones who, frankly, have the biggest reason to be vexed, with all these old blokes chasing them. So, who is it who’s so outraged? Hmm, perhaps it’s the old blokes in charge? Incensed that women who should be disappearing and making way for younger women for them to ogle have still got it, can still flaunt it, and want to flaunt it at younger men? Just a theory…
