In a demanding job? Five easy tips on how to balance work and family

Living

With the increased cost of living, it is not surprising to find out that we are busy providing for our families and spending very little or no time with them.

It’s not easy balancing work and time with family, but how well you manage this can make a significant difference to your relationships in and out of work.

In fact, it has been reported that conflict between work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress for working adults.

Well, the following tips will be helpful in balancing work and family.

1. Make the mornings easier

Avoid starting the day on a frazzled note by getting organized the night before.

Pack the kids' lunches, lay out their clothes (plus your own), and have everyone shower. You should also decide what to make for breakfast and repack the diaper bag, backpacks, purses, or work bags to be placed by the door, right next to your keys, so you can grab them and lock up on your way out.

2. Create and organize a family calendar

It is important to put your family priorities first. A calendar can include dates when bills are due, a chore chart for the kids, a list of school and family events, extracurricular activities, birthdays and more.

3. Stay connected during the day

Just like in a relationship, communication is key. Stay connected with your children even when you're not together. If you're going to miss or be late to an older child's event, give her something special in the morning, like a good-luck charm or a personal note.

4. Established limits and boundaries between family and work

It is important to create boundaries or imaginary lines of protection between your work and family. This means determining which actions are acceptable and unacceptable.

Boundaries hold the line to protect your work from the distraction of family, as well as protect your family involvement from the obligations at work.

5. Involve people you trust in the process

It is perfectly okay to ask for help. Do not try to be a super mom or dad. When things get tough, ask for help from people you trust.
