8 things to look for when house hunting

Your Home

Most people enjoy looking for homes and imagine living in them. Well there are some things to put into consideration before diving and jumping into the house hunting process. Before shopping for a home you need to do some financial work.

Here are some tips to get you started.

A house within your budget

This is not the lender's job or the agent’s job, it’s yours! Take a look at the amount of money you earn each month, after taxes aka your net salary or income. Use that to budget and don’t go over your means. You will not afford it in the long run. Don’t expect someone else to make that decision for you. Look at your finances and make the call.

Location

One of the most important factors when house shopping is location. You can change almost everything else but once bought, you cannot change your home's location. When you go house hunting consider proximity to your work, ease of access, noise from neighbors, traffic as well as access to shops, schools and public transportation.

The Neighborhood

Be sure the neighborhood, and not just the house meets your expectations. Check if it’s safe and secure for you and your family to walk around, drive to despite the time and has a safe play area for the kids.

Aesthetics

Besides the location you should consider how the house looks. Does it appeal to you and does it match your interests for example in terms of access to the property regarding driveway, stairs, front door etc.

The size and floor plan

We understand you may be thinking about buying your dream home somewhere in a leafy suburb but is your dream home practical? Do you really need six bedrooms and four bathrooms when you live alone or with your spouse? No you don’t!  Therefore, think of a home space that will fit into your lifestyle and make you feel homey.

Storage space

It may sound unnecessary but remember chances are you are not getting rid of your old stuff and chances of buying new things to give your new space some character are high. It will come in handy in storing your clothes, furniture and other valuables you have been unable to part ways with.

Asking questions

It is crucial to ask questions. Before you decide to rent or buy a house, you have to be sure. Let’s say you find dry taps, cracks on the walls or leaking ceilings, you should raise an alarm before you settle in it to avoid future problems. Be very keen on how your queries are answered and if any action is taken with haste.

Mortgage or cash

When buying a house, cash buyers enjoy better deals. If you settle on a mortgage plan ensure it’s reasonable and realistic for you to pay.
