I recently came across an article that opened my eyes and made me look at friendships differently.
The writer broke down the different kinds of friends we have and the important roles each of them play in our lives.
We all have that friend we never hesitate to call when we are in a financial distress. This kind of a friend never disappoints and all they ask is how much and how soon you want the cash. By the way someone tells me this kind doesn’t exist in the male fraternity. Well…what would a girl do without such rescue?
The other type is the one who offers a shoulder when things are thick relationship wise or celebrates with you when your love life is thriving. This type doesn’t care about how many times you call to update them on things love. She offers that much needed advice as much as you don’t even think twice going against it and doing totally the opposite most of the times.
The other type is the one who you consider a friend but you don’t have anything in common. You mostly interact on Facebook by liking each other’s posts and this doesn’t go beyond sharing funny/ silly videos. You are only friends on Facebook.
Then there’s that friend whose other name is Showing Up. This friend doesn’t disappoint, they are always in the frontline organising baby showers and surprise birthday parties. They have all it takes in rallying other friends to make that surprise party successful. They are always in the YOLO mood. They are cake and chocolate lovers, they are happy people. Don’t we all need such friends?
This list is long but for now I’ll rest my list here. When I think about all the types of friends mentioned here, I realised I have failed on the part of showing up for events. Well…I do what I can but I have realised I can do much better. It means a lot when you spare some time off your busy schedule and show up for a friend’s birthday or wedding party. It doesn’t matter what time you get there at least you made an effort to show up.
This year is almost over but I’ve decided to be that girl who shows up. Its never too late. I plan to carry on this spirit in the coming year . Let’s all be that friend who shows up . Happy showing up!
