How many times a day do you subconsciously touch your face? Do you ever remember to clean your cellphone? Here are some skincare habits to start this year.

1. Clean the screen of your phone

Avoid cell phone-induced acne by cleaning your phone at least once a week, if not daily. The bacteria that accumulates on your phone is transferred to your skin when you make or receive a call. Use an antibacterial wipe or a small cloth containing disinfectant or sanitiser. When using your phone avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your skin, or use earplugs.

2. Wear sunscreen every day

Even though we know how damaging the sun can be, sometimes we take it for granted. Sun damage is the biggest aging factor therefore protect your skin by wearing sunscreen or a natural alternative. If you prefer to avoid sunscreen, protect your skin by wearing a hat and staying away from direct sunlight.

3. Stop touching your face

Your hands are your greatest skincare enemy. Your hands come in contact with millions of germs, which are easily transferred to your face. When you are tempted to touch your face, think about rubbing a dirty cash note on your cheeks. Touching your face can lead to breakouts.

4. Beauty sleep

There’s a direct correlation between sleep and your appearance. Getting at least eight hours of quality sleep helps you look younger and you even feel more attractive. While you sleep, your skin repairs itself thereby slowing down the aging process. If you can, sleep on your back, as sleeping on your side can create pressure on your face, which may lead to wrinkles.

5. Eat clean

Unless you belong to the 5 per cent who have perfect skin throughout their lives, what you ingest shows up on your face. This includes food, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes and environmental pollution. Limit your exposure to toxins by following the 80/20 rule. To maintain glowing skin, 80 per cent of your diet should consist of healthy unprocessed foods.

6. Drink plenty of water

I tested this out by drinking less than 2 litres of water for one week and then 3 litres during the next week. My skin was so much brighter during the week that I drank the 3 litres. Water really does make a difference to your skin. I have incorporated an app on my phone that sends me hourly reminders to keep drinking.

7. Manage stress

When we’re stressed, our body produces more cortisol, which in turn tells our oil glands to produce more. Cortisol also triggers skin inflammation which leads to various problems such as dehydrated skin and premature aging. Find productive ways to manage stress such as regular exercise or deep breathing.
