An open letter to men who do not like the sight of pregnant women

Dear disturbed man,

I learnt the other day that a baby bump can make you have an eye sore! Just the other day, you claimed ‘that shape’ takes happiness away from you. You even had the guts to suggest that the ‘shape’ be taken off your screen!

Maybe I should let you know that your inhuman words are the eyesore here. Just like your everlasting Adam’s apple, pregnancy is not a disease. If we can stand your Adam’s apple the rest of our lives, what is so hard in appreciating our baby bumps for months? Maybe I should remind you that we did not get pregnant by drinking four cups of coffee! It takes a man and a woman for that ‘ugly’ baby bump to start growing. Inside that ‘annoying’ shape lies a very innocent being, probably one that will deliver you from the mental slavery you are in some day.

Women go through a lot of challenges when they have that baby bump. From swollen feet to deadly morning sicknesses. Are you even aware that some women have lost their own lives in the process of bringing forth another? Disturbed man, who died and made you the judge of who should and should not appear on our screens? Have you even taken a minute to look into the mirror and make a fair judgment on what you see?

If God could just reverse some roles and make you carry the bump for a day, I am sure you would check yourself into a hospital and demand for an admission in the High Dependency Unit. But see, as women, we don’t do that; we take each day of our pregnancies as a blessing. We appreciate the little challenges that come with carrying a child inside our wombs. That’s why you see us fending for our families to the very last minute. With that baby bump and weighing almost twice our normal weights, we still manage to wake up early as usual, make sure your breakfast is ready and the house in order before we report to our work stations if any. We drag that ‘ugly’ bump with us all through the nine months trying to be the committed wives and mothers just so you feel comfortable.

Disturbed man, you made me have lots of thoughts running through my mind after your nasty comments. At some point, I almost thought that like a crocodile, you hatched from an egg somewhere in the shores of Lake Turkana. You do not bite the hand that feedeth you man. You took your sweet nine months in your mother’s womb just like the rest of us. She laboured and painfully gave birth to you just like we are going to do when our time comes. Why do you forget so fast about your past? Are you too afraid to look back and appreciate the little things in life women do to make your life better? Take a chill pill Mr Forgetful and look back, no, you will not turn into salt like Lot’s wife if you look back and appreciate women.

We are women; just like you, we are on this earth to accomplish our desired missions. Let me assure you that standing pretty before you to make you smile all day is not one of our missions. If you want to spend your life looking at women and judging them according to their shapes, kindly walk into a mall and buy yourself a dummy. It will never grow any thinner or fatter than you bought it. It will make you smile all day because it will never get that baby bump you so hate.

Meanwhile, if our bumps hurt your eyes that much, make use of your neck and turn the other way because the bumps are here until further notice. Yours proudly, Bumpy mothers to be.
