What's your hair texture?

More often than not, women classify their hair as either thick or thin. In fact, as long as the hair is long, it doesn’t matter to some women whether it is healthy or not.

However, the hair texture matters a lot. Coarse hair is thicker than a piece of thread; medium hair is the same width while fine hair is thinner than thread.

Hair width is important and must always be considered when one wants to style their hair; it also determines the products you may use. The width/thickness of individual strands is what decides your hair texture and not the number of strands you have on the head. Your hair texture can, therefore, be coarse, medium or fine.

Below are the three hair textures. Which one is yours?

Coarse: These are strands that have a very wide circumference making them the strongest of all hair textures. It looks thick and has a wiry feel; making it difficult to break. The hair always appears full on the hair and when styled, it holds well. It also takes longer to dry and can resist some chemical treatments and colour. That is why we have chemicals classified as super and regular. The hair can also stand a lot of heat and does not break easily.

When you have this type of hair, use products that retain moisture so that the hair does not dry out. Due to its strength, it can easily be manipulated although this should be done cautiously. Yes it is strong, but if you let it stay dry, it may begin to break thus you should always moisturise it. This type of hair also has a lot of protein thus it would be advisable to avoid products that contain proteins.

Medium/normal: This is the most common type of hair. Its thickness is neither too small nor too large. It has a lot of bounce and body. It requires regular deep conditioning and occasional protein treatment to rebuild the hair shaft affected by heat and chemicals. It is not so fragile and as such can be easily manipulated into styles and holds style well. It looks thick as it covers the entire scalp. If well taken care of, it is not prone to breakage. It also allows chemical processes to develop as expected.

The advantage of this hair type is that there is a wide range of products that can successfully be used on it.

Fine: The strands are extremely small and narrow. This makes it fragile and prone to breakage and damage. When you hold this hair type up to the light, it’s almost see through. It is light and can seem limp since it has no volume. Interestingly, people with finer hair have more hair than those with thicker strands. It also tends to be oilier and holding a style with it is not easy. The hair is very light and often falls flat on the head. It is thus, prudent to use light products as heavy ones may weigh down your fine strands.

Such hair processes very fast when relaxers or colour are applied. Deep condition it after every wash. Fine hair has less protein and requires regular protein treatment (monthly) to rebuild it.
