Queen of talk show Oprah Winfrey once shared with her audience that motherhood is the toughest job on earth. Much as she has never been one, what she sees her friends go through is sure testimony that it is indeed a tough call. This is one job that is so tedious, demanding and has no leave days. They say once you are a mother, you are on call 24/7 all year round.
Mummy is always the last to sleep and the first to wake up. She puts aside her comfort just to make sure that hubby and the kids are well taken care of. For some reason, the kids always come first. Mama has to make sure the baby is well fed before she herself, can munch something; she also has to ensure the baby is clean and comfortable before she can also take a relaxing bath.
This is her draining routine all year round — a life of sacrifice and selflessness. But what I have discovered from the few years I have been a working mother, is that there comes a time mummy needs a good rest.
Every mommy needs a little time away from this crazy life; otherwise she will break down from a burnout. Mummy needs to set some time every year to go somewhere just to replenish her energies. I call it the ‘mommy get-away’.
Spoiling yourself
It does not have to be a whole month; a few weeks can do the trick. I do this twice a year when I am on leave. I book myself in a nice hotel at the Coast where I just concentrate on spoiling myself.
During that hibernating period, my day consists of going to the spa for a relaxing massage, heading to the beach with a relaxing book and having my hair and nails done. Thank God my hubby is supportive of this idea, and makes sure I get as minimal interruptions as possible.
During this period, I switch off all links to my crazy life. No phone, no email, just me. If there is something urgent my hubby can reach me on the hotel phone. A mommy get-away always ensures I am so pampered and refreshed, and by the time I come back, I am ready to carry on my demanding job of being a mommy, wife and career woman.
