Cecilia Mwangi: Am not a Party girl

A lot of people know you as former Miss Kenya and as the face of the anti jigger campaign. What they don’t know is that you have a day job...

I studied Computer Technology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and specialised in satellite communications. My work revolves around computer software, hardware and networking. I work for Intersat Ltd where I have been for the last six years.

What do you love about your job?

It involves travelling a lot and this has given me a chance to interact with different cultures and people. It has also given me a chance to realise Kenya is blessed when it comes to facilities and technology, a fact we often take for granted.

You recently became a mother. Tell us about that experience.

My daughter is called Cherise and she will be turning two in August. She means the world to me.

How has motherhood changed you?

My priorities have completely changed. I see things in a different way. I don’t even imagine a minute without her.

You look so fabulous and trim, what is the secret?

I am disciplined about what I eat. I eat small portions but frequently, which annoys my colleagues at work. When you become a mother, your body changes and if you are not careful, you could end up eating unhealthily and by the time it gets to your head, things are out of control.

Plans for baby number two…

Not now. I want to give Cherise all my time and attention before giving her a sibling.

What is your most annoying habit?

Every day I ensure I’m home by 5.30pm. I have never been a party girl. I don’t like hanging out, when my day is done I go straight home. My colleagues at work have tried to change this habit in vain. I am a homebody.

What is the one thing don’t people know about you?

I was a prefect most of my childhood. In high school I was a class monitor and in campus I was the class representative.

What is a perfect date to you?

Watching a movie indoors. I am one of those freaks who are scared of driving at night. I do everything in my house.

What does Cecilia do when she is just chilling and having fun?

I have a wonderful garden where my daughter and I and our dog bobby love to hangout and do some gardening whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I am working on moving my career to the next level. I plan to change my career very soon, so watch this space!

Also my daughter will be six by then I hope she will grow up healthy and happy.

For the anti-jigger campaign, I hope by 2018, jiggers will be history in Kenya.
