A young man in our locality is at loggerheads with his father because he insisted on marrying an older woman with a dodgy background.
Kaka Saidi has sought the intervention of elders at Kahawa Tungu to help him reconcile with his father.
Maria, the woman at the heart of the dispute, seems to have smitten the young man; so much so that he overlooked the fact that she has four children with different fathers.
Apparently, the old man wants nothing to do with the woman, and is even threatening to disinherit his son unless he divorces Maria.
This, however, is easier said than done, as the young man swears by the gap between Maria’s teeth. “I am ready to live in hell as long as Maria will stay with me,” he has been heard saying.
The woman in question is much older than Kaka Saidi. And whereas Saidi is marrying for the first time, the woman has been divorced four times.Besides, she moved into Saidi’s house with four children, each representing one of her ex-husbands.
Those in the know claim Saidi and Maria would have a blissful marriage, were it not for the woman’s querulous nature. To make matters worse, she directs her barbs at none other than her mother-in-law, boasting that she has a doctorate in dealing with in-laws.
VILE CURSES
“As long as you worship your husband, the other sods can go hang,” she was overheard saying.
Matters came to a head one day when Said’s father had to arbitrate a bitter quarrel between his daughter-in-law and wife. The old man was shocked by Maria’s vile curses, and decided that he would have a word with his son when he got home.
“Saidi, my son, if your parents have their eyes scratched out by the wildcat you brought home, don’t you think you will be to blame?” he asked angrily.
But the response he got took him aback: “It serves them right for poking their noses where they are not wanted, Saidi retorted as he marched off to see what Maria had cooked.
The father-son relationship had gone down a slippery slope from that day, and mediation was the last effort in reconciling the two.
When everybody gathered, I brewed enough kahawa tungu to quench the thirst of the tribunal, and the hearing started.
First to speak was Saidi’s father. He expressed his disapproval of his son’s wife, concluding by declaring, “That woman must go!”
When Saidi rose to speak, he admitted that his wife was older than him, and that she had children from previous relationships, factors that did not make her an ideal bride.
“However, I cannot leave Maria as she has secret weapons that I cannot live without,” he said.
He then started praising her waist, hips and other features.“Maria is the bomb; that is why my father is jealous of me,” he said storming out.
“Those are weapons of the destruction of man, you fool,” his father yelled back. “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. I won’t even curse you, bewitched fool.”
As we speak, the marriage hangs in the balance.
