The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a task force report on the dissolution of the Electoral Commission of Kenya and the implementation of the transitional arrangements.
The approved termination packages for the includes:
Ex-gratia payment equivalent to three months gross salary
Service gratuity of 31% of basic salary for the period served
One month salary in lieu of notice
Unutilised leave to be commuted for cash
Other members of staff will be re-deployed to various ministries through the Ministry of Public service as recommended by the task force. Those who will not be re-deployed will receive:
A golden handshake of Kshs 170,000, one month salary in lieu of notice, severance pay of one month basic salary for each year worked, and unutilised leave to be commuted for cash up to the maximum days allowed under each staff category.
The cabinet meeting chaired by President Kibaki also approved payment of pension dues under the terms and regulation of the ECK pension scheme or any other private pension scheme.
The Electoral Commission was disbanded in January following complaints that the officials mishandled the December 2007 election. Violence arising from disputed presidential election results caused the death of 1,500 and the displacement of 350,000.
