Diaspora Kenyans wary of divisive politics

A section of Kenyans in Finland have voiced concern over divisive politics evident in the run up to the 2013 General elections.

The group, which had gathered to celebrate the country’s Hero’s Day in Espoo, Helsinki, said it was alarming to see politicians building their support along tribal lines.

“It is evident that tribalism is rife and most of us are divided today, many years after heroes fought for our independence. The way of leadership in our country Kenya must be changed,” said Mr Cleofhas Kirwa, Secretary General Kenyan-Finnish Organization (Kefiso).

He criticized the leadership pointing out that the rights of the diaspora have been put into the back banner.

“Now we are going into the elections, neither do we know where to vote nor any information about voting process. It is unfortunate,” he said.

Mr Kirwa reminded those present to embrace other tribes despite of political affiliations. His sentiments were echoed association chairman David Okelo, who also derided leaders for retreating to regional cocoons ahead of March 4, elections.

Mr Okelo told the gathering to shun tribal leaders keen on dividing the country.

“As Kenyans in diaspora, we should remain together. Let us avoid tribalism and actively participate in what is happening back in our country,” Mr Okelo urged the attendants.

The diaspora also revisited the public outcry occasioned by MPs’ recent move to award themselves a hefty send-off package saying it was dishonorable of legislators to secretly approve the proposition.

“We were appalled by the MPs with their selfish interests and they are not even paying taxes. We shall us not allow our efforts to be trampled upon,” they said.

At the same time, the diaspora was challenged to participate in democratic process in the country. Although many of them praised the Constitution, a feel of discontentment in management of country’s affairs was evident among Kenyans in Finland.

They also reminded leadership to adhere and respect the rights of every citizen. Throughout the event, there was a feeling of disappointment after the embassy in Stockholm failed to show up even after pledging support. However, an official said the Ambassador and her team in Sweden were engaged elsewhere in a demanding duty.

The event was also attended several non-Kenyans in the capital city of Finland. It was the third major event to be celebrated by diaspora in Finland since the passing of the new Constitution.
