Simply the best: Tina Turner dies at 83

Tina Turner, widely referred to as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, has died at the age of 83.

News of her demise was confirmed by her spokesperson who said the legendary musician died in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

"With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model."

Turner's musical journey began in 1957 when she joined Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. Initially known as Little Ann, she made her first appearance on the record "Boxtop" in 1958.

It was in 1960 that she adopted the stage name Tina Turner and achieved early success with the popular duet single "A Fool in Love". Together, Ike & Tina Turner became renowned for their captivating live performances, solidifying their reputation as one of the most impressive acts in music history.

Throughout their career, they released memorable hits like "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," "River Deep - Mountain High," "Proud Mary," and "Nutbush City Limits" before parting ways in 1976.

However, Turner's story didn't end there. In the 1980s, she experienced an extraordinary resurgence, marking one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of music. Her highly acclaimed album, "Private Dancer," released in 1984, not only achieved multi-platinum status but also featured the Grammy-winning hit single "What's Love Got to Do with It."

This track became her first and only song to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Remarkably, at the age of 44, she became the oldest female solo artist to achieve this feat.

Turner continued to enjoy chart success with subsequent hits like "Better Be Good to Me," "Private Dancer," "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)," "Typical Male," "The Best," "I Don't Wanna Fight," and "GoldenEye." During her Break Every Rule World Tour in 1988, she even broke a Guinness World Record for the largest paying audience (180,000) for a solo performer.

Beyond her musical endeavours, Turner ventured into acting and appeared in films such as "Tommy" (1975) and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985).

In 1993, her autobiography "I, Tina: My Life Story" was adapted into the biographical film "What's Love Got to Do with It." Retiring from touring in 2009 following her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, Turner left a lasting legacy.

Her contributions to the music industry have earned her a place among the best-selling recording artists of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide.

Additionally, she was honoured with numerous accolades, including 12 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a duo with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021.

Turner's impact as an artist and cultural icon was further recognized by her appearances on the covers of Rolling Stone magazine, as well as her inclusion in their lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

She also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
