Big relief as MCA is sworn in after 2 years wait

It was a big relief for Harriet Kerubo Ong’era after she was finally sworn in as a Jubilee Party Nominated Member of Kisii County Assembly by Speaker David Kombo after two years.

Speaker Kombo declared the previous holder of the position Rose Moturi Mwene a stranger in the House after she lost a court battle in which she had challenged the replacement of her name in the nomination list by Jubilee.

The Speaker on Thursday asked the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort Ms Mwene out of the Assembly Chambers as he ordered Ms Ong’era to be brought in for swearing-in as a duly nominated Member of Kisii County Assembly after receiving a go ahead from IEBC.

“As you are aware, as the Speaker, I have no powers to bring in a new member to the House or send away any member, but we have to follow the law since I have received a letter from the IEBC directing me to swear in Harriet Ong’era as MCA,” Kombo said.

Speaker Kombo ruled that Ms Mwene will be paid all her dues for the two years that she has served as a Nominated MCA. Jubilee secured five seats under the gender top up category in the Kisii County Assembly but Ong’era was erroneously listed as a man.
