Spread the love all year round and to the needy

Love is in the air today as spouses shower gifts and pleasantries on each other because it is Valentine’s Day. February 14, is dedicated to lovers, where they are supposed to show affection and be happy with each other.

In recent times, the day has been highly commercialised where men and women compete to buy the most expensive gifts for their loved ones. Case in point is the highly advertised night of romance at an exclusive hotel in Nairobi that will cost a whopping Sh2.3 million.

Now, while it is much in order to do what one can afford to show affection, it is equally prudent to remember the needy today.

Charity is voluntary, but we urge Kenyans of goodwill to spare a thought for the orphans, disabled, the sick and the extremely poor on this day of love. There are hundreds of thousands of students from poor families struggling to raise school fees. Contributing to a bursary fund would put a smile on a poor student’s face and lay a strong foundation for the future. Still, small acts of love should be spread throughout the year among loved ones.

Recent reports indicate the marriage institution is under threat where divorce rates are rising especially among the educated and rich Kenyans.

Love should be for all seasons. Couples should be faithful and truthful to each other to build strong families. For when we have strong families, morality will be rooted and many of the country’s challenges such as insecurity, corruption and violence will be half solved.

But hey, happy Valentines’ Day! Spread the love!
