Cricket: Gymkhana in must-win NPCA T20 clashes

Nairobi Gymkhana will lock horns with Sikh Union and Ruaraka Sports Club in a quest to seal a last four slot in the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association Super Twenty20 league.

Double victory at the weekend will see fourth on the log Gymkhana enhance their chances of playing an eliminator match against whoever finishes third on the standings among Stray Lions, Kanbis and Swamibapa.

Gymkhana have garnered 22 points, ten more than fifth and sixth placed Kongonis and Ruaraka after 11 rounds of matches. Three slots have already been grabbed by defending champions Swamibapa, former holders Kanbis and unbeaten Super League kings Stray Lions.

With a ten-point advantage Gymkhana will have to make the best out of their remaining three ties starting with today’s match against struggling neighbours Sikh Union. They will be looking to avenge the nine wickets loss to Sikh Union in the first round encounter.

However, going into today’s match Gymkhana will have an upper hand facing a second-string Sikh Union side after a disagreement between first team players and the club management.

Unlike the strong Sikh Union they met in the first round that comprised three Ugandan internationals Arthur Kyobe, Hamu Kayondo and Frank Nsubuga they will play a team whose players have struggled to achieve a double digit score in their last assignments.

Other notable players that will be missed at the crease are player-coach Nadeem Ahmed, Abdul Rehman and upcoming national team player Gurdeep Singh. Gymkhana will be keen to complete a double when they host Ruaraka tomorrow. They beat Ruaraka by eight wickets in the first round at their backyard.

Gymkhana will rely on Kenya international Karan Kaul who has been very impressive for his side despite his effort going to waste in numerous occasions as his teammates have failed him. Lucas Oluoch who has been impressive with the ball is also expected to excel for Gymkhana.
