Bride to be kills fiance and brags to police that she enjoyed watching him drown to his death

USA:   A woman accused of murdering of her fiancé allegedly told investigators it "felt good knowing he was going to die" as she watched him drown after sabotaging his kayak, a court heard.

Angelika Graswald is charged with the murder of her husband-to-be Vincent Viafore, who drowned while kayaking in New York's Hudson River in April.

At a court hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors said she told authorities that she tampered with his water craft before watching him sink to his death.

Orange County Assistant District Attorney Julie Mohl also told the jury that Graswald admitted to investigators that she "felt happiness and relief" while watching him die.

Mr Viafore, 46, died in the Hudson River near Banneman's Island on April 19.

According to the authorities, Mr Viafore and Graswald set off in separate kayaks at around 4.15pm and went ashore, where they spent a couple of hours.

But on the return voyage, Mr Viafore's kayak began taking water and capsized.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Mrs Mohl told Wednesday's bail hearing that at around 7.15pm, the victim "went under water and drowned".

Twenty-five minutes later, Graswald called emergency services on her mobile phone and capsized her kayak, something confirmed by witnesses, Mrs Mohl said.

She was later pulled from the river by rescuers and treated for hypothermia.

Graswald is said to have admitted staging the capsizing of her vessel to make it look like she had tried to save her fiancé after providing inconsistent statements.

The defendant, who is charged with second-degree murder, was released without bail, but the judge set her bond at $3million (£1.9million).

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, she was the beneficiary of two life insurance policies belonging to Mr Viafore and stood to gain $250,000 (£158,000) after his death.
